The apostle and the physicist! We recently discovered that many persons are of the mistaken view that home ownership is a constitutional right, and by "constitutional right" they mean that it is the government's responsibility to ensure that they own a home. Having discovered this pervasive mindset toward home ownership, we thought it only fitting to give our thoughts on the invalidity of this view. Albert Einstein is credited with the quotation that, "you can never solve any major problems in your life, with the same level of thinking you had when you that created problem". In the present context, this quote means that in order for you to become a home owner, you must first changes how you think about accomplishing this goal. Unfortunately, many Bahamians are inclined to abdicate the responsibility of acquiring basic needs to the state. While that may have been necessary in the erstwhile fishing village, a modern Bahamas must demand that its' citizens have "a national commitment to self discipline, industry, loyalty.." [see the preamble of the constitution of the Bahamas]. The time is long past for Bahamians to have been weened from the teats of government. While exceptions can be made for those too young, too old or too disabled to care for themselves, the rest of us ought to commit ourselves to those values penned in our constitution. When we depend on the government for our basic needs, by default, we are admitting our unwillingness to take ownership of our individual and collective destinies. This mindset of dependency reveals that we have no confidence in ourselves. Moreover, we are all to eager to be shepherded by those supposed luminaries who in many instances, are struggling to meet their own needs. The truth is, many of our leaders have survived on the largess of the public purse for longer than one would consider decent. Yet, we persist in looking to the very same people to make our personal ambitions a reality, when in large measure, their own dreams remain unfulfilled. Paul the apostle admonishes us to, "transform yourselves by the renewing of your mind...". Clearly, this biblical injunction confirms that we will not substantively change our lives unless we first change our thinking. If this apostle believed otherwise, he would have said so. Even salvation begins with the mind, believing is an action of the mind and so is repenting. If we apply this lesson to our lives in gerenal, we would accomplish greater things than heretofore. Finally, if we truly believe that we can have a home without the intervention of beaurecrats we will. Likewise, if we repent of our slothful, and undisciplined ways, will have our own homes, and maybe the kingdom of heaven and eternal life will also be ours.
